commie-mania.livejournal.comI have been doing some readings of Nietzsche for my Existentialism class. I am falling more and more in love with the guy. I want to marry him and have his babies! Too bad he's kinda dead... :P Anyway, I have finally realized why I hate North America so much. At first when I was reading Nietzsche I thought that he would love North Am, where being active is valued, dressing well is valued, having sex is valued... I thought he would think that this place was pretty cool, cosidering all of his attacks on ascetic(monastic) ideals which emphasize the death of flesh and continence(chastity, not having sex). But then I talked to this British girl , Kate, in my class. She hates North Am because she says that people here are infantile. They never speak to adults, they don't hang out in bars, and they are having house parties until they are 20. Two days later it hit me. Kate was not able to articulate her ideas properly. People here are not exactly infantiles, it's more like alot of people here are the "last men". They are the lowest common denominators when it comes to intelligence and maturity. "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" by Nietzche emphasizes his concern that the world of tommorow will become the world of the last men. Men who don't want to be rich or poor, because this is too much of a burden, men who don't want to be creative, for that is too much sacrifice, men who don't want to be intelligent, because it scares them that somebody else is more intelligent than them. North Am is precisely this society. People who are smart are considered nerds. People who are artistic are creeps. People who have a passion about something are considered geeks. Isn't this the biggest example of re-sentiment in history? For according to Nietzsche re-sentiment is a feeling that is produced in response to somebody else's virtue. Remember the discussion about the slave and master morality? Let me refresh your memory. Master morality, according to Nietzsche, is a morality of relitivism. It is a morality of "good" and "bad", where "good" is strong, inteligent, beautiful, etc... The bad in this morality is the lack of strength, goodness, inteligence, etc... Now what is considered "good" in slave morality is exactly what is considered "bad" in master morality, namely: lack of goodness, lack of inteligence, humility, continence and so on... And what is considered "evil" in slave morality is exactly what is considered "good" in master morality. In other words, slave morality is a rebelion against master morality. Slave morality people feel inferior to masters and because they can not, according to Nietzche, rebel in any other way, they exert a moral revenge by putting the master morality on it's head. "We are not inferior to you masters, we are superior to you, if we were in your position we would not act the way you act. We do not rebel against you because we can't, we do not rebel against you because we are better than you!" Now Nietzche put this idea in context of Christianity. Remember Mathew 5: "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the Earth..."? Now, in context of what we are talking about, the "jocks" are the slaves in this case, while the "nerds" are the masters. The jocks are the lowest common denominator when it comes to intelligence, and they force their stupidity on us all! Do you watch TV often? It is full of TV shows like "Jackass" and "Pimp My Ride". And it seems that the shows are getting dumber and dumber. It seems to me that TV personalities, like Steve-O and Connan OBrien are deliberately hiding their intelligence to please audiences. Do you remember the last time when a celebrity actually said something smart!? I honestly do not, when their stupidity is availible in abundance. They do not want to "over-burden" us with intelectual conversation, and we love them for that!
This "cool" morality is even worse than Christianity. In both cases the individuals are not allowed to think for themselves, but at least Christianity gives you the room to be intelligent. The "cool" morality seeks to reduce everyone to the lowest common denominator of stupidity. As soon as one says something smart, this person is rejected by the "cool" social circles, this person is reduced to nothing. He/she is despised and boycotted. God damn this generation of "cool" people, there is no doubt they will get what they deserve, namely: a shitty unsatisfying job, an unsatisfying life, and a wife/husband who would leave them for a better car/breast implants. The problems is that they don't have to make the rest of us feel miserable in the process.
